Hello

I'm Kayan Houssein, an Integrative Counsellor and registered MBACP member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Below is some information regarding my training, accreditation, qualification, experience, specialisms and additional training.

Training

I trained at Minster Centre, the UK's first Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy training institute.

The training emphasised deeply getting to know myself, including several years of personal therapy,  group work and self reflection, helping me learn about my wounds and blind spots.

Qualifications

  • MA in Integrative Psychotherapy

  • Diploma in Integrative Counselling

  • Certificate in Complex Trauma level 1

  • Bsc in Psychological Studies

Accreditation

I am a registered MBACP member (388910) of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

I am also in the process of applying for the UK Council for Psychotherapy membership.

Experience

I worked as a support worker for eleven years in homelessness services, across community, outreach and residential settings. I worked with a diverse range of clients, including ex-offenders with serious offending histories, people at risk of homelessness due to alcohol and drug use, and those experiencing severe and enduring mental health difficulties. These roles gave me an in-depth understanding of the criminal justice, social services and mental health systems, alongside extensive experience in adult safeguarding.

During my training, I worked for an organisation providing long-term, low-cost individual therapy to clients experiencing psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. I now work with individuals and couples in private practice. I am also about to begin teaching at the Minster Centre. I am also part of an intellectual community that studies psychoanalysis, attending annual lecture series's and conferences.

Specialisms

Whilst I have specialist knowledge and experience in several areas such as:

  • Anxiety/Panic Attacks

  • Low mood/Depression

  •  Dissociation

  • Psychosis

  • Schizophrenia

  • Bi-polar

  • Bereavement and loss

  • Issues of difference and identity

I try to foster an open and curious stance, helping each person to try to understand how their symptomology is understood in the context of their lives, perhaps certain symptoms exist in response to traumatic moments, or as surival stratergies. Deeper work including characterlogical change aims to gently unravelling these defences, increasing self awareness/knowledge, aiding with integration and providing greater choice and autonomy.

Additional Training

  • Certificate in Complex Trauma level 2 (still completing)

  • Cross Cultural Couples Therapy

  • Internal Family Systems for Couples therapy

  • Integrative diagnosis

  • Severe Presentation and the use of drugs

  • Polyvagal theory

  • Family and belonging

  • Childhood Sexual abuse

  • Death and Bearevement

  • Intersectionality

  • The Unconscious
